The Complete Guide to Mushrooms: Quality, Extraction, and Bioavailability

Read time: 2 min

Mushrooms are having their moment, but with all the buzz, it can be hard to separate fact from fiction.

Are all mushroom products created equal? Spoiler alert: they’re not.

From extraction methods to sourcing and bioavailability, there’s a lot to consider when choosing a product that truly delivers. Whether you’re a seasoned mushroom enthusiast or just getting started, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to make informed decisions and experience the full benefits of these incredible fungi.

Fruiting Bodies vs. Sclerotia

Imagine a mushroom is like a tree. The fruiting body is the part above the ground—the fruit, leaves, and flowers. It’s packed with nutrients, much like a juicy apple.

Chaga mushrooms, however, are a little different. Found in extreme climates like Finland’s icy forests, Chaga doesn’t have a typical fruiting body. Instead, it stores nutrients in its sclerotia, which we use to ensure you get the best benefits.

The Extraction Process: What You Need to Know

Not all mushroom products are created equal. Extraction is key to unlocking the full benefits of mushrooms.

  • Non-Extracted Powders: These are just ground-up mushrooms. The cell walls remain intact, making it hard for your body to absorb the nutrients.
  • Extracted Mushrooms: These go through processes like alcohol-based, ultrasonic, or water-based extractions, which break down the cell walls and make nutrients more bioavailable.

Why Dual Extraction Matters

Dual extraction combines ultrasonic and water-based methods to ensure you get all the beneficial compounds, including polysaccharides like beta-glucans and other active components, without leaving behind any chemical residues.

Sourcing: Why Finland Makes a Difference

Many mushroom products use ingredients from questionable sources, often grown in less-than-ideal conditions. We source our mushrooms from Finland, a country known for its clean air, pristine water, and strict environmental protections.

Our Chaga mushrooms, for example, are wild-harvested from birch trees in Lapland, where harsh conditions force the mushrooms to develop higher concentrations of beneficial compounds. This resilience is then passed on to you.

The Truth About Ratios

You might see brands boasting high extraction ratios, like 10:1 or 100:1, as a sign of potency. But these numbers are often meaningless if the source mushrooms are of low quality or the extraction process is subpar. Remember: it’s about quality, not quantity.

Beta-Glucans vs. Alpha-Glucans

Beta-glucans are one of the key beneficial compounds in mushrooms. However, some brands boost their beta-glucan numbers using yeast-based powders, which don’t offer the same health benefits as true mushroom beta-glucans.

Alpha-glucans are the giveaway. Mushrooms naturally have low alpha-glucan levels, so we measure them to ensure the beta-glucans come solely from mushrooms. We only use extracts with alpha-glucan levels under 6%.

Bioavailability: The Key to Absorption

It’s not just what’s in your mushrooms but how well your body absorbs it. Bioavailability ensures you feel the full benefits. While some products have a bioavailability of just 50%, our dual-extracted mushrooms boast over 90%, so you get the maximum health impact.
